Flamenco classesin Telde
At the Rocío Pozo Dance School, on Calle Obispo Verdugo in Telde, we teach flamenco to adults and to teenagers from 12, in groups split by level. You can start having never danced before.
What you work on in class
Footwork
Zapateado is percussion. You learn to tell apart the sound of the ball, the heel and the toe, and to produce it cleanly without punishing your knees. We start slowly, with the movement coming from the hip rather than the ankle.
Compás
The ear comes before the feet. We work the 4, 3 and 12-beat cycles with palmas until the accent falls on its own — without compás there is no flamenco, however good the technique.
Posture and braceo
The upper body tells half the story. Posture, an open chest, shoulder placement and arm work that comes from the back rather than the elbow.
Palos and choreography
Each group builds choreographies by palo across the year. Those are the pieces performed at the end-of-year show in June.
